Charles Walter Leathern, Sr. of Media, PA, formerly of Newtown Square, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 13, 2021. Charles was born to Walter and Sadie (Bradford) Leathern in Deepwater, NJ on November 4, 1927.Charles attended Salem High School. He joined the Army in February 1946 and was stationed in Austria as a member of the First Battalion, 7th Infantry, for most of his service. He also served as a member of the Honor Guard for Major General Harry Collins. Following his Honorable Discharge, he began a carpentry apprenticeship and spent more than 45 years in a career where he became well-known as a master of his craft. He was a member of Carpenters’ Local 435 and worked on many commercial buildings in the Philadelphia area throughout his career. He also managed his own construction business. His handiwork as a finish carpenter can be found throughout Delaware County.Charles met the love of his life, Letitia Millard, in 1948 and they were married in 1951. In 1952, Charles and Letty bought a plot of land on Chestnut Street in Newtown Square and together they built the home where they raised their family and lived for over 65 years.While his children were in high school, Charles was active with the Marple Newtown High School Marching Band Parents’ Association. He became involved in the Williamson College of the Trades Auxiliary during the time his son attended the school and remained an active participant for years after Charlie’s graduation. He enjoyed hunting, woodworking and making crafts but his biggest enjoyment came from spending time with his family. He never missed a grandchild’s activity or event including softball and soccer games, dance recitals, band concerts, and addition to his parents and his wife, Charles was predeceased by his son, Charles Leathern, Jr., siblings Herman Adkins, May Porter, William Leathern, Lester Leathern and Helen Miller as well as sister-in-law, Marian Bihun. Charles is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and John Shaw, 3 granddaughters – Rachael Shaw, Nicole Lewis (Trevor) and Danielle Masterson (Justin) and a great-grandson, Carter Masterson as well his sister, Joan family would like to extend a grateful thanks to the staff of ProMedica-Foulk Road, the ACE unit of Christiana Care-Wilmington, Main Line Health-Riddle Hospital and Sunrise-Granite Run for the wonderful care and support they provided during the past few months.
