Charles was born on February 24,1949 to the late Edward and Catherine Johnson Scott in Decatur, Alabama. He was the 5th of 9 children. His family called him Walter, some of his friends called him “Bone”, and most recently called him “Charlie”. We do know that whatever you called him, he would always acknowledge you with a laugh or smile.
Charles attended Lakeside High School where he had a passion for sports. Unfortunately, he wasn’t interested in school by any means but he was an awesome baseball player. We believe that had he been committed to it, he was good enough that he could have played professionally. Charles drove the school bus for the Atlanta City Public School for several years until he injured his knee on the job. He later worked for the Fulton County Sheriff Department and lastly drove for Motor Coach of Atlanta. He tried his hand at becoming an entrepreneur. He created and marketed his own brand of hot sauce named CJ’s Hot Sauce (“It’s Red, It’s Hot, It’s Good,”) in Michigan and had it in major stores. In the 70s, he had a small part in the movie Black Samurai as Leopard Man, he also had a lawnservice business in Decatur, was a photographer and he even tried a mobile inflatable business in Decatur which his brother, Edward, loaned him all of his equipment. Walter would try anything. He was always on the go between Atlanta, Decatur, and Michigan. The family, at times, would not even know he was in Michigan. However, they were so excited when they did find out that he was there. That was just ” Walter”, “Charlie” or “Bone”
Preceding him in death were; his father, Edward Lee Johnson, Sr; mother, Catherine Johnson Scott; his sisters, Donna Moseley, Ora Johnson, and Kathleen Savage, and his brother William Clifford Johnson.
He leaves to cherish his memory: one son, Charles Walter Johnson Il, Eastpointe, MI; one sister, Nettie (Calvin) Garth, Enterprise, AL; brothers, Claybon (Lori) Johnson, Monroe, MI, Edward Johnson, Jr, Inkster, Ml, and Nathan (Cynthia) Johnson, Romulus, Ml and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends and his very special friend, Liz Moore, Hillsboro, AL.
