Charles Wayne Shumate, 83, of Goldsboro died Tuesday morning at his residence. Born in Goldsboro, he was the son of the late Harry Shumate and Pattie Snow Merriman Shumate and brother of the late, Harry Shumate, Jr., Olivia Matthews and Dorothy Valentino. He graduated from Goldsboro High School where his passion for sports helped him excel in football as the varsity left-handed quarterback, basketball and swimming. After graduating he enlisted in the Navy as a corpsman and he served during the Korean Conflict. He then joined the Navy Reserves and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until he was recalled to active service in the Navy. He loved everything about his Carolina Blue Heaven.
