Charles S. ‘Stewartie’ Demond, 83 of Elkton, MD, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family.

A lifelong resident of Cecil County, he was born in North East on March 21, 1928, the son of the late Ulysses G. Demond, Sr. and the late Mable Hines Demond. He was the husband of 49 years of the late Jean Demond who died on Jan. 19, 1999.

He served his country admirably during the Korean War in the Army.

He worked as a carpenter for Union Local 626, retiring from Frederic G. Krapf & Sons, Wilmington, DE.

Stewartie was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, Charlestown, MD, the Upper Bay Museum, North East, MD and Union Lodge #48 A.F. & A.M., Elkton, MD where he served as Past Master.

He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and crabbing. Most of all, he greatly enjoyed traveling to St. Croix with his good friends, Bud and Kathryn Shivery.

Survivors include his children: Charles Stewart Demond, Jr. of Rising Sun, MD, Hope Dieffenbach and her husband Tom of Elkton, MD and Sarah Hoopes and her husband Don of North East, MD; one sister: Janice Demond Sprout of Elkton, MD; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Ulysses G. ‘Nick’ Demond, III, and an infant brother and sister, Rodney and Ellen.
