Charles R. Rategan Jr., 71, of Winsted, Connecticut, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 27, 2022, following a valiant battle with Parkinson’s Disease due to Agent Orange exposure during the Vietnam War. He was the beloved husband of Lynn (Green) Rategan. Charlie was born in Winsted, Connecticut on August 7, 1950 to Charles and Mary (Coon) Rategan. He graduated from The Gilbert School and proudly served in the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army. Following his service, he married and raised three children with his wife, sharing 45 years of marriage. Charlie worked at Winsted Public Works Department and at CIGNA prior to starting his own landscaping business. His illness forced him into early retirement, but Charlie still loved spending time outdoors, working around the yard and chopping firewood. Charlie loved his children dearly and enjoyed all their family vacations. Maine was his happy place and he would count down the days until each trip to Old Orchard Beach. Besides his love of harvesting firewood, Charlie also loved scouring flea markets and antique shops as well as trips to Cracker Barrel and Dairy Queen. He was happy to share his secrets of how to make a good cup of coffee, how to stay cool in the summer or how to cure poison ivy with anyone he would meet. He was always excited to swap stories with fellow Vietnam veterans. In addition to his wife, Charlie leaves behind his children: Charlie (Susan) Rategan, Chrissy (Cory) Austin and Jed (Emma) Rategan; grandchildren Roman and Cadence Rategan; sisters Linda Stickney and Joan (David) Giannattasio; mother-in-law Arline Green; sisters-in-law Lori (Mark) Brodeur and Lisa (Michael) Durocher; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, father-in-law Laurence Green and brother-in-law, Stanley Stickney.
