Matthews: Charles R. Church, Sr., passed away Friday afternoon, November 25, 2011 in Marion General Hospital, Marion, after battling ongoing health conditions. He was born in Big Stone Gap, VA, the son of the late John and Bertha (Shaw) Church. He graduated from Powell Valley High School in 1964. Charles married Johne Sexton on January 9, 1964.
They moved to Matthews in 1974, where they raised their family and enjoyed many good neighbors and making many memories. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2009. Mr. Church was a member of Upland Community Church. He was the youngest of 11 children. Charles had a wonderful sense of humor and loved sharing a laugh and many debates with friends over a good cup of coffee.
Survivors include a son, Rob (Barbara) Church, Pendleton; a daughter, Traci (Martin) Hearn, Upland; a brother, Doug (Brenda) Church, Kennewick, WA; five grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Tye (Ashley), Brandon, and Kali (Christian); and three great grandchildren, Devin, Levi, and Jayden. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
