Charles R. Anderson, 85, Anderson, IN, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2009 at Community Hospital, Anderson, IN.

Charles is survived by two daughters; Barbara Gentry and Judity Platz husband, Robert Platz of Leo and son Chuck Anderson of Taswell. Granddaughter; Sonja Gentry. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years; Mary Anderson. Mother; Edith Anderson and father; Chester Anderson.

He is also survived by his special friend; Pauline Merritt. He was born on May 12, 1923 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Charles graduated from Lincoln High School, Cambridge City, Indiana in 1942. Charlie was a member of the Varsity Basketball team and was a all around athlete. He was the representative for Boys State.

Charlie continued his education following WWII, studying Labor Law at Indiana University, Walter & May Reuther UAW Family Education Center, Ohio State, Ivy Tech, Navy Department, Bureau of Navigation and Indiana Business College. Joining the Navy in 1942, he became an Aviation Machinist 1st Class.

Charlie served in the U.S. Navy Asian Pacific American Pacific Campaign, CASU 38. He gave 45 years service to Steel, Glass and Auto-workers Unions. Charlie served as a Legislative Consultant, Committeeman, Recording Secretary United Steelworkers Union, Richmond, Indiana, Ball Brothers Local 93, Steward and Chief Steward – 6 terms, Delaware County AFL-CIO President, International United Glass Workers – International Representative, Delaware County AFL-CIO Education Director, Eastern Indiana Coordinator of Organizing for the AFL-CIO Industrial Union Dept, UAW 662- Vice-Chairman 6th Area UAW CAP Council, Chairman CAP Drive and Citizenship and Legislative Committee.

Charlie received the UAW’s Walter P. Reuther Distinguished Service Award. He received the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Evan Byah, 1991. Charlie served as a Government liaison for State Department – served as Educational Director and Manager to train union members from the Republic of Cyprus and securing the U-2 bases under President John F. Kennedy.

He served as a consultant to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy regarding Social Reforms of Denmark and the Ministere Des Affaires Sociales, Paul Vorre. He also served as a Lobbyist to House of Representatives regarding the Gramm-Rudman law and military spending. Charlie was a 52 year member of Free Masons, York Rite.

He served as Precinct Committeeman of Salem Township, Delaware County, Indiana. Charlie was employed at Ball Corporation, Muncie Indiana, General Motors Allison’s, Indianapolis, Indiana, Overland Motors, Anderson, Indiana and Delco Remy Division of General Motors Plant, Anderson, Indiana.

He served as Board member for following organizations or community projects; Indiana Mental Health Planning Commission, Prairie Creek Reservoir Development Committee, John F. Kennedy Memorial Library Finance Committee, National Council of Senior Citizens, Health, Social Welfare & Recreation Committee, Delaware County, Indiana, Muncie Union Health Center, Ball Corporation Credit Union, WLBC-WMUN Radio & TV Advisory Committee, Delaware County Courthouse Bond Issue Committee, Ball State University, Emens Auditorium Bond Issue Committee, Ball State University, Medical School Development Committee, Ball State University, Architectural School Development Committee.
