Charles C. Maguire of Clive, Iowa, passed away on January 23, 2021 at Silvercrest at the Woodlands. He had spent many wonderful years at Woodlands Creek Active Retirement Community until his health started to decline in November of 2020.
Charles was born on April 13, 1923 to Charles and Selma (Johnson) Maguire in Rockford, Illinois. He was a science major and wrestler at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He left college early to join the Marines during WWII, but later finished his degree. He moved to Des Moines, Iowa and received his teaching certification from Drake University.
Introduced by mutual friends, he met and married a fellow teacher, Mary Lu Conner on March 30, 1955. They enjoyed many happy years together raising their two children. With summers free, the family often headed west on camping trips. Charles and Mary Lu fell in love with the area around Jackson Hole, Wyoming and it soon became their annual destination.
Charles’ longest tenure of teaching was at Hubbell Elementary School, where he took physical education to a new level. He started an annual Spring event named the Maguire Relays. Charles was very popular with his students and their parents. In 2006, Hubbell’s newly constructed gymnasium was named after him. During his teaching years at Hubbell, he was also assistant wrestling coach at nearby Theodore Roosevelt High School. His team was undefeated during the year he was head coach.
Charles is survived by his children, Paul (Penny) Maguire of Sun City, Arizona and Deborah (James) Stanton of Clear Lake, Iowa; grandchildren, Jerrod (Kelly) Maguire, Todd (Erica) Maguire, Mark (Abbie) Stanton and Melissa Stanton; great grandchildren, Beck Maguire, Charlie Jo Maguire, Makenna Stanton, Maguire Stanton, John Stanton and Isabella Stanton; his brother, James (Donna) Maguire of Monument, Colorado and their children, Melissa (Rick) Powell and Kevin (Cathe) Maguire; his niece, Sallie (Jimmy) Soto of Tucson, Arizona and many other nieces, nephews, their families and a multitude of friends and former students. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lu (Conner) Maguire; his sister, Irene (Dick) Taplin; two nephews, Charles Taplin and David Taplin; and his parents.
