On October 22, 1920 in San Antonio, TX, Charles Louis Dimry, Sr. was born. He was the youngest of eight children born to the union of Obadiah Allen Dimry and Susan Whitehead Dimry. In 1924, the family moved to California and eventually made Los Angeles their permanent residence.

Charles, also known as Zeebee or Zip, spent most of his formative years growing up in Los Angeles, where he received his primary and secondary education. As a youth, he had the prime attention of his older sisters, Jesse, Ora, Verna “Bootsy”, Francis and Beatrice “Peedo”, and older brother, John. He also looked after all of his nephews and nieces. Charles enjoyed being around his family and friends and enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball.

Charles joined the California Civilian Corp (CCC) when he was sixteen and transferred to San Diego about a year later. In 1939, shortly after arriving in San Diego, he met the love of his life, Cecil Daniel. They were married on October 20, 1940 in Yuma, AZ. A total of five children were born from this union, Charles Jr. “Sonny”, Robert (deceased), Lynetta “Doddy”, Camilla “Candy” and Cecil “Nippy” (deceased.)

Charles and Cecil raised their family in Logan Heights on Julian Street and Skyline, where the family developed long lasting friendships with many of their neighbors in the community.

Papa, Uncle Zeebee, Mr. Charlie, and Blue Gill Charlie, as he was affectionately known to those who knew him, enjoyed getting together with family, going to picnics, golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening and finding antiques at local swap meets and thrift stores. He especially enjoyed just talking to his neighbors, family and friends on a variety of subjects which included sports, the Bible, family history and many other topics.

He was a Master Bricklayer mason for over fifty years, assisting in the construction of many brick buildings around San Diego County. His specialty was brick fireplaces.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Cecil, two sons, parents, two brothers, and five sisters. Those left to cherish is memory include son, Charles L. Dimry, Jr. and his wife Patricia; daughters, Lynetta Ivey-Dimry, Camilla L. Williams and her husband Herman; eight grandchildren, Robinetta, Charles III (Erin), Robert III (Denise), Dwight, Lance (Tennille), Michelle (Felton), Petrea and Todd; sixteen great-grandchildren; longtime friends, Carlene and Irving Ellis; neighbors, Sam and Eve Mills; sister in law, Eloise Daniel and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Charles L. Dimry, Sr. leaves a legacy of hard work and love of family. As he liked to say, “Save your money and stick with your honey”.
