Charles L. Champowick, Jr, 83, of Plainville, died Sunday, April 29, 2012. He was the widower of Dorothy (Bartkowski) Champowick.
Born in New Britain of November 3, 1928, Charlie was a longtime resident of Plainville and graduate of Porter and Chester Institute. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served his country for three years during W.W. II., and was honorably discharged in 1949. He was employed as a tool & die machine designer, and retired from Tuttle & Bailey and Sherwood Industries. In addition, he worked as a sub-contractor for the Atomic Energy Commission during nuclear testing in Enewetok Atoll. Charlie was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #511 and Elks Lodge #957, both in New Britain; a member of the U.S.S. Maddox Destroyer Association and the Tin Can Sailors Association.
He is survived by his nephews, Daniel Gorman and Charles Gorman and his wife, Carolyn of El Paso, TX; his nieces, Nancy Gorman of Houston, TX, Jayne Pearson of VT, and Lynn Frick of MA; his sister-in-law, Geraldine Bartkowski; his cousins, Helen Violette and Ted Orzech and his wife, Sue. He was predeceased by his sister, Nellie Gorman.
