Charles Henry Joens, the son of Henry and Esther (Bollinger) Joens, was born on June 2, 1927 in Havelock, Iowa. Charles was drafted in the United States Army on February 16, 1951. He was stationed in Germany where he served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1953 and was very proud of his service. On February 28, 1953, Charles was united in marriage to Catherine Walding in Ozark, Alabama. The couple moved to Algona where Charles began working for Jack’s OK Tire. Due to back troubles, he started working in automotive part sales at Arnold’s Motor Supply and for Joe Bradley. He later became the manager at Montgomery Ward; retiring in 1984. Charles was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church and the American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking. Catherine later taught Charles how to crochet and he would also help her with her quilting projects. Left to cherish Charles’s memory is his wife of 66 years, Catherine; children, Michael Joens of Martensdale, Timothy (Luanne) Joens of Saginaw, TX, Bruce (Brenda) Joens of Lawton, OK and Marion (Albert) Ostrander of Martensdale; seven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; sister Alene Dean of Fairfield, CA and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
