Charles Joseph Mayer, 44, passed away February 1, 2014 at his home in Sharpsburg, GA surrounded by family after a year long battle of aggressive brain tumors. Charlie was born February 12, 1969 in Windber, PA to parents Carl and Carol Mayer. Charlie was an incredible husband to his wife, Karrie Mayer, for the past twelve and half years and a very loving and active father to his children, Jakson (9) and Mackenzie (8).

He was truly the most amazing husband, father, son, brother and friend! Charlie was an Air Tran Airways Boeing 717 Captain based in Atlanta for the past eleven years, following aviation careers with Chautauqua Airlines and US Airways. He graduated from Windber High School and Kent State University (Phi Delta Theta), where he made many lifelong friends. Charlie always lived his life to the fullest and lived true to his favorite saying “Life is Good”.

He had a love for traveling, sailing, the Caribbean Islands, scuba diving, snow skiing, hiking, camping, mountain and road biking, woodworking, kayaking, water skiing and boating on Lake Wedowee with his family. A few weeks prior to his diagnosis, he and his wife went to the British Virgin Islands to fulfill their dream of obtaining their sailing certificates. Months before, he accomplished goals of riding in a 100 mile bike ride and completing his first sprint triathlon. One thing is for sure, he could never say, “I wish I would have” because he always did!

Charlie was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis Mayer. He is survived by his wife, Karrie Mayer, son, Jakson, daughter, Mackenzie all of Sharpsburg, Georgia; parents Carl and Carol Mayer and grandmother, Nova Mayer of Windber, PA; In-laws, Gary and Cindy Hale, brothers-in-law Casey Hale (Liz), Cole Hale (Trisha), sister-in-law, Keely Lowe all of Ft. Wayne, IN. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
