Cohoes – Charles J. Connell (affectionately known by those who knew him as Chas, Charlie, Chuck and Fishing Papa), 69, of Island View Drive died suddenly Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
Born in Troy, Charles was the beloved son of the late Martin Connell Sr. and Helen “Red” Hiorns Connell, and the husband of Sally Howe. He attended Catholic Central High School and was a graduate of Troy High School where he was a standout athlete, earning All-City honors in hockey, football and baseball. Charles attended Bowling Green University in Ohio where he continued to play hockey before serving in the United States Navy. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and earned several medals, including the Vietnam Service Medal and Ribbon with Bronze Star and Silver Star. Following his return home from service, Charles was a master carpenter for many years.
Charles was a sports enthusiast, and especially enjoyed watching hockey and the New York Yankees.
A loyal family member and friend, Charles was always willing to lend a helping hand, and was loved by everyone who knew him.
Charles was the loving father of Courtney (Marc) Antonucci, Loudonville, and grandfather of Clara. Other survivors include his siblings, Harrison Connell, Martin (Sharon) Connell Jr., Paul Connell, Christine (Michael) Sheehan, and Anne (Joe Smart) Sheehan; several nieces, nephews, cousins and their children; and his former wife, Patricia Connell. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Gerard Connell.
