HAVERHILL – Charles (Costa) James Antonelos, 79 years old, of Springfield, MA, passed away after a long illness on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. He is predeceased by his wife of 45 years Joanna D. Antonelos, nèe Adamopoulos originally of Haverhill.
Charles was born on the island of Kefalonia in Greece on July 26, 1933, son of the late Dimitrios and Melveena Antonelos. A child during WWII, times were extremely difficult. The island was at first occupied by Italian troops and then by Germans. Poverty was rampant and Charles, at the age of 18, boarded a Greek shipowner’s vessel as a cook and left for America. Settling first in New York, then Haverhill, he would ultimately settle in Springfield where he resided for over 50 years. He bought his first home shortly after, opened his first pizzeria in Enfield, CT and another in Somers, CT.
