Charles Sandy, 92, of Indianapolis, passed away Saturday, December 23, 2017. Charles was born in 1925 to Charles Herbert Sr. and Doretta (Harms) Sandy in McPherson, Kansas.
Charles, a World War II veteran, enlisted in the Army Air Corps during his junior year in high school. He was then allowed to complete his high school senior year before going into active duty in 1943. His enlisted class was selected for pilot training, however, there was a shortage of tail gunners and so, the class was re-directed to that specialty. Due to his 6′ 4″ frame, Charles was too tall to be a gunner.
He was subsequently transferred to the Signal Corps branch and trained to be a communications specialist. During the war, Charles guided heavy bombers to and from their European targets via radio Morse code. He was based in Reykjavik, Iceland until 1945. After the war, Charles attended and graduated from the Kansas State University, in 1952, with a degree in Petroleum Geology.
He was originally self employed and developed oil fields in: Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, and Texas. Amax Coal Company sought his expertise in the area and hired Charles as an Oil Exploration Geologist. While working in Texas, Charles accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on February 13, 1953. Charles was eventually transferred to Indiana and became a member of Suburban Baptist Church. Charles dearly loved his family along with his church family.
Charles is survived by one sister, Dorisjane Casey of Iowa, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Marilynn Voth.
