Charles H. “Chuck” Niles, 57, of 1045 Main St., Hope Valley, RI, died peacefully on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at his home. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Thompson) Niles.
Born in South Kingstown, RI, on April 30, 1949, he was the son of Charles L. Niles of North Kingstown, RI, and the late Marjorie (Heath) Cooper.
Mr. Niles was the Public Works Director for the town of Hopkinton, RI, for 15years. He also served as interim Town Manager for the town Hopkinton, RI, and served as a reserve on the Hopkinton Police Department and as Civil Defense Director for the Town of Hopkinton.
Chuck had been employed at Harris Graphics in Pawcatuck for 23 years and served on the Board of Directors for the Cottrell Credit Union.
Active in his community, he was a dedicated and life member of the Hope Valley Volunteer Fire Department. He served as a driver, assistant engineer, Chief Engineer, and retired as a Deputy Chief upon taking the Town of Hopkinton’s Highway Supervisor’s Job. Chuck was the key person in starting the District’s haz-mat team in 1984. He was the former treasurer for the Southern Rhode Island Fire League.
Chuck received the Firefighter of the year in 1980, Volunteer of the Year in 1988, Special Service award in 1987 and dedicated service award in 1978. As Hopkinton’s Highway Supervisor he received the dedicated to the Community Award in 2004.
Chuck was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and boating.
Besides his loving wife and father he leaves his children; Charles Niles of Westerly, Carolyn Niles of GA, Sheila Gagnon of NH and Sharon Gardiner of North Stonington, CT. He was grandpa of, Ronald, Heather, Vanessa and Jake.
He was predeceased by his son Robert Dugas Jr.
