Charles Calkins, 84, of South Ottawa Township, died February 27, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Chuck was born on Jan. 5, 1930, in Ottawa to Harold and Olive (Chalus) Calkins. He was a 1947 Graduate of Ottawa Township High School. He was a life-long farmer, worked at Libbey-Owens-Ford, and was a timber broker throughout the Midwest for 40 years. He married Betty Henry on September 8, 1951, in the Utica Baptist Church. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church where he served on the original Building Committee. He was a former song leader, Deacon, and Trustee, and served as the Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the LaSalle County Farm Bureau, and the Timber Buyers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; 5 children, Kenyon (Kathy) Calkins, of Ottawa, Steven (Tracy) Calkins of Naples, Florida, Linda (Mark) Mitchell, of Bloomington, Indiana, Charles G. (Paula) Calkins, of Ottawa, and Jerry (Cheryl) Calkins, of Ottawa, 12 grandchildren: Melissa, John, Brianna, Kristin, Grant, Krista, Kayla, Benjamin, Emma, Cassandra, Cameron, and Mollie, one great-granddaughter, Grace, and his sister, Mary Lou Friestad. Pallbearers will be his four sons and grandsons, John, Grant, Benjamin, and Cameron Calkins, and his son-in-law Mark Mitchell.
