Charles G. Derbabian, 88, of East Haven entered into rest in the Hospice Unit of U.S.V.A. Medical Center, West Haven on April 25, 2011 after a brief illness. Born in New Haven on Jan. 21, 1923, he was the son of the late George and Sophie Derbabian. He grew up and attended schools in New Haven, and, after graduating from Hillhouse High School in 1941, he entered the U.S. Army and served with an anti aircraft unit in Europe during World War II. He started his long and dedicated career with the New Haven Board of Education as a custodian at WilburCrossHigh School in 1959. In 1962, he switched to Hillhouse where he worked until his retirement in 2002.During his 43 years in the school system, he worked with many legendary coaches and recorded the statistics for numerous basketball, football and softball teams. He helped in nearly all aspects of game preparation and management and continued to do so even after his retirement. He also worked at Mory’s part time. One of his proudest moments came when he was inducted into the First Annual Hillhouse Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Charlie truly put his job first for the benefit of kids. He is survived by two sisters, Freda Bailo of East Haven and Rose (Gus) Nicolopoulos of Boca Raton, FL.; a brother, George Derbabian of Milford; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces and great grand nephews, all of whom adored him. He also leaves his many friends who, over the years, he considered his family.
