Charles F. “Chuck” GilbertAge 88 of Owosso passed away Saturday, August 15, 2015 peacefully with his loving family by his side at Oliver Woods Retirement Village.A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30am. Tuesday August 18th, 2015 at St. Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Monday August 17th, 2015 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm with a rosary prayed at 7pm and the 4th degree Knights of Columbus following the rosary.Chuck was born October 2, 1926 in Lansing, the son of Frank and Marjorie (Fuller) Gilbert.He graduated from Sexton High School in Lansing and attended Michigan State University.Chuck was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.He married Mary Ann Stump at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lansing on August 7, 1948.Chuck became owner and operator of Western Auto in 1965 changing names in 1979 to Gilberts True Value Hardware and Appliance. Since 1965 he expanded the hardware store multiple times with his sons and helped with the family business after his retirement till he was 87 years old. Chuck was one of the founders and board members of Owosso Downtown Development Authority. He was an avid golfer where he made many friendships, traveled with his beloved wife Mary Ann to many places, was called “Mr. Fixit” and the “Eveready Bunny”, and had the love for Michigan State sports teams.He is survived by his wife Mary of 67 years; children K.C. (Diane) Gilbert, William “Bill” (Debra) Gilbert, Susan (Eric) Johnson, and Kayan (Scott) Poyer; son-in-law Ernie Wilson; 11 grandchildren; T.J. (Sara), Chloe, Claire, Catie, Dylan, Erica (Monte), Meagan, Alli, Evan, Mitchell, and Alyssa; great grandson Conrad.Chuck was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen Wilson, sister June (George) Gardner, and granddaughter Lizzy Poyer.Chuck’s family would also like to thank the wonderful staff at Oliver Woods Retirement Village and Memorial Healthcare Hospice for the kindness and care they gave him.Memorial contributions are suggested to Memorial Healthcare Hospice.Online condolences may be sent to the family at nelson-house.com
