Charles Emerson Beams passed away on May 22, 2007. Born May 9, 1921, in Galveston, Texas, the son of Charles Woodward Beams and Mary Louise Emerson. A graduate of University High School, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana State University in 1942. Upon graduation, he was hired by General Electric Company, and under contract to the U.S. Navy, served as a radar engineer. His career spanned 38 years with General Electric and encompassed work relating to Heavy Military Radar Systems.
He retired in 1983 as a manager of Military Marketing in Syracuse, NY. Charles was a member of the General Electric ELFUN Society, the Empire State Masonic Lodge, a past member of Sons of the American Revolution, and White Oak Golden K. He served on the Newnan Historical Society board, and was an active member of the First Baptist Men’s Sunday School Class. He was a past president of Top of Georgia Airstream Park in Helen, Georgia. His creativity and engineering skills parlayed into inspired pieces of art of wood and stained glass.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sara Holloway Beams; two daughters, Mary Beams Miller and husband, James B. Miller of Dripping Springs, TX and Margaret Beams Kelly and husband, Samuel W. Kelly III of Marietta, GA; sister Lillian Beams Pierce and husband Scott Pierce of San Marcos, CA; and four grandchildren, Morgan B. Krueger-Miller and wife Marie Kreuger-Miller, Melissa L. Miller, Virginia L. Hrushka, and Matthew C. Hrushka.
