Charles Edward Wilson passed away at his home on November 13, 2021. Charles was born in Chicago, Illinois, and lived in Welaka since 1945. He was a 1957 graduate of Crescent City High School. He served 6 years in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Bennington.
He retired as a maintenance supervisor from Georgia Pacific in 1997 after 33 years. Charles served as a councilman on the Welaka Town Council and then as mayor for one term from 2005-2009. He had been involved as a counselor with “Time for Freedom” Prison Ministries and had also been a member of the VFW Post in Crescent City. His favorite pastime was being out on the St. Johns River fishing or riding in the forest. Charles never met a stranger he could not talk to.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Oakes Tresing, a brother, Earl Oakes, father-in-law, Leaon Nail, son-in-law, James Sparks.
Charles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelina, one daughter, Tiffany Clifford (Steve) of Aiken, SC, two sons, Jason Wilson (Alayna) of Troutman, NC, Michael Wilson (Lisa) of Hollister, bonus daughter, Cyndy Anzek of North Augusta, SC, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
