Charles Edward Johnson, 70, of O’Fallon, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 23, 2021, at St. Paul’s Home in Belleville, IL. Charles was born November 12, 1951, in St. Louis, MO. He was an electrician for 30 years at Granite City Steel and a member of the United Steelworkers Union. Across the span of his life, Charles enjoyed building computers and was always an early adopter of all aspects of technology.
He had great interest in flight including NASA, R.C. planes, and drones, and had even taken flight lessons himself. Anyone who met Charles enjoyed talking to him for his intelligence, wit, and humor. He enjoyed cigars with his friends at the Tinder Box, family vacations across the country exploring National Parks and other sites, crossword puzzles, motorcycles, Corvettes, and professional car racing. Charles will be missed by all who knew him. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; Henry and Vertiree Johnson (nee Perry).
Charles is survived by three children; Dione Turner of O’Fallon, IL, Nate (Cardina) Johnson of St. Louis, MO, and Selena Johnson of St. Louis, MO; five grandchildren; Mikaela Suggs of O’Fallon, IL, Xavier Turner of O’Fallon, IL, Isaiah Turner of O’Fallon, IL, Nylah Johnson of St. Louis, MO, and Cienna Johnson of St. Louis, MO; and the mother of his children; Debby Leeling of Fairview Heights, IL.Charles had a number of close friends with whom he made lifetime memories or spent hours upon hours on the phone “solving the world’s problems.” Special thanks to those people who kept him connected, especially when it became harder for him to do so in person; Robert Taylor, Betty Hemrich, Greg Turner, Jamie Howe, and Sonny Morris.
