Charles Edward Fulkerson was born March 3, 1926, 4 miles north of Stella, Missouri on a farm, to his parents Charles Creed and Etta Lee Fulkerson. He grew up in Missouri and attended school there. He joined the Merchant Marines at the age of 15, serving his country during World War II.
