Charles E. Runkel, 79, of Springfield, IL and formerly of Jacksonville, IL, died Saturday, March 27, 2010 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

He was born May 14, 1930 in Jacksonville; the son of Fred L. and Beulah Petefish Runkel. He married Nancy C. Due on July 18, 1953 in Jacksonville and she survives.

He is also survived by three children, Gehr Runkel (wife, Pamela) of Boca Raton, FL, Chris Shafer (husband, Stephen) of Griggsville, and Eric Runkel (wife, Rhonda) of Springfield; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Runkel was a 1950 graduate of Jacksonville High School and attended Illinois College. He was a retired Lt. Detective, serving 27 years with the Illinois State Police. He also served three years with the Illinois National Guard.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 41, Illinois Police Association, and was a founding member and former director of the Illinois State Police Credit Union.

A long time dedicated mason, Mr. Runkel was a member of Harmony Lodge #3 AF & AM, a past master of Jacksonville Lodge #570 AF & AM, Jacksonville Chapter #3 RAM, Jacksonville Council #5 CM, Hospitaller Commandery #31 KT, Scottish Rite Valley of Springfield, and Ansar Shrine.

He was an avid bowler participating in many leagues. Devoted to the boy scout program and its ideals, Charles formerly served as an assistant scoutmaster with Scout Troop 107 in Jacksonville.
