Dr. Charles Dean Soucek, 85, passed away suddenly on Friday, September 1, 2017 in Kansas City, Missouri following a car accident the previous day. 

Charles was born in Bladen, Nebraska on October 7, 1931 to the late John and Alice Soucek.  He is survived by his wife of 63 years, La Vaun Soucek, daughters, Susan Miller and Angela Soucek, sons Charles Michael and Anthony, and five grandchildren.  He is also survived by his two brothers, John F. Soucek and wife, Lorna, and James Soucek and wife, Joan, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles graduated from Bladen High School in 1948, followed by Hastings College in 1952.  He earned his medical degree at the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha in 1956.  While in medical school, he and La Vaun Hefnider were married in 1954.  He then served in the Navy from 1957-59 as commissioned lieutenant, Medical Corp in Taiwan.

After his military service as a physician, he worked at Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.  He moved his young family to Kansas City, Kansas in 1964 to join Radiology Chartered medical group.  He practiced as a radiologist at several Kansas City hospitals for approximately 30 years and became a Fellow for the American Board of Nuclear Medicine.

While still a physician, Charles purchased Captain’s Fancy resort at Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.  This began his second career as a real estate investor.  From the early 1980’s until his death, he owned and managed numerous rental homes in the Kansas City area and Lake of the Ozarks.  He enjoyed interacting with the tenants and his small work crew, and physically working on the properties himself.

Charles was always interested in science and technology.  In addition to nuclear medicine, he enjoyed computers, space exploration and robotics. He was a proponent of Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors as a clean form of nuclear energy, to eliminate the use of fossil fuels and stop climate change.
