Charles “Charlie” Martin Smith was born in Indianapolis on June 11, 2018 to parents Cody & Stephanie Smith. After a two-year battle with cancer (stage 4 neuroblastoma), Charlie passed away in his Franklin home on December 11, 2021. Charlie won the battle.
Charlie is survived by his loving parents and his brothers, Henry and George. Charlie is also survived by Glen & Malta Miller (paternal great-grandparents), Harry & Sally Nicholson (maternal great-grandparents), Richard & Janet “Papaw & Memaw” Smith (paternal grandparents), Dewayne & Donna “Pappy & Grammy” Hamilton (maternal grandparents), and a whole host of aunts and uncles.
Never was there ever a child so happy and meek as Charlie. Despite an arduous fight with cancer, Charlie found great joy by spending time with his family. He loved to play on Memaw’s farm, go swimming in Grammy’s pool, fight the boogey-man with his aunts and uncles, watch movies, paint (Charlie was a modern Picasso), and eat chicken and fries and Coke and ranch. Don’t forget the ranch. Charlie also loved to sing and dance to worship music, his favorite song being Amazing Grace. While he loved to have fun, Charlie proved himself time and time again to be a champion of courage as he underwent surgery, always took his medicine, had his port accessed or received shots. Spending so much time at the hospital, Charlie grew to love his 5th floor friends at Riley Hospital as family, too.
But most of all, this brave boy loved his brothers. Even after weeks of sitting in his hospital bed with weak legs from chemotherapy, the moment Charlie would arrive home and see Henry run out to the car, Charlie would muster up enough energy to climb out and embrace his partner-in-crime. Charlie loved to dress up as any number of Star Wars characters or superheroes and wrestle with Henry and daddy. He loved to sit on the counter and help mommy make chicken and noodle soup, or as he called it, “carrot soup.” Charlie will be sorely missed.
The family would like to thank their church family at Hopewell Presbyterian, Gray Road Baptist, and First Baptist Church of Mooresville for their prayers and support through this journey. Many thanks to the countless friends and family who followed Charlie’s fight on his Facebook page (Cheering for Charlie) and supported our family through prayer and gifts. God bless you all.
