Charles Carroll Swanke, resident of Rockville, MD died peacefully in his home on February 4, 2017 at the age of 91.
Charles is survived by his wife, Margaret Sheehan-Swanke; children, Melissa Craig, Charles “Scott” Swanke, Sylvia Mahon, Jeanne Zingaro, and Mary Kraft; three grandchildren, Jesse Kraft, Kelli Benner and Kristi Kraft; five great-grandchildren, Jacoby Kraft, Caroline Kraft, Aaron Benner, Brandon Benner, and Daniel Benner; siblings, John Walter, Jean Colene, and Sister Sylvia Swanke, a sister of Mercy. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Ann “Teri” Swanke; and sisters Mary Swanke and Carol Nickerson.
Charles was born on January 2, 1926 to Henry and Margaret Swanke, in Cheyenne, WY. He graduated high school and entered the Navy in 1942. During his 25-year career he was stationed across the country and served in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. Charles met and married Lillie Ann Bazz in 1948, they remained together until her death in 2000 after 52 years of marriage. He retired from the Navy as a Commander in 1967.
An avid golfer, he moved to Manor Country Club in 1970, where he served as President of the Board of Governors and the Community Association and worked in data systems sale and commercial real estate. In addition to his love of being on the golf course, he was a firm believer in breakfast and would never pass up dessert. While these were at the top of his list, first and foremost were his family and his faith.
Charles married Margaret Sheehan in 2005 and together they spent much of their time attending formal dances, traveling and practicing their faith.
