Charles C. “Barney” Fortney, 97, of Tunnelton passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at his son’s residence in Arthurdale with family by his side. He was born December 28, 1915, in Kingwood, son of the late Willis Claude and Cora Lillian Pyles Fortney. Soon after, his family moved to a farm near Tunnelton, and growing up doing chores there helped shape his work ethic throughout his life. Charles graduated from Tunnelton High School in 1933 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Fairmont State College, where he lettered in baseball, football, and basketball. He received his master’s from the University of Wisconsin and his principal’s certificate from WVU. In WWII he served in the US Army in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Korea, and was awarded two bronze stars.
