Charles August Ferguson, 96, of Manchester, CT beloved husband of Lorraine (Kinney) Ferguson passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital.
Charles was born in Canterbury, CT on December 20, 1924. Son of the late Dudley L.H. and Anna M. (Steinbach) Ferguson. He grew up in Canterbury and attended Trade School in Putnam.
A Navy draftee, Charles served in World War II. Following his discharge he went to work at Hartford Electric Light Company and later Connecticut Light and Power Company. Using the skills he learned in the Navy, he worked his way from the cable crew to a splicer, then a crew foreman and ended his 40 year career being an underground line supervisor. He has been retired for 32 years.
Charles was a dedicated volunteer in the Hartford County 4-H program for 44 years. He volunteered numerous hours at the 4-H farm in Bloomfield, trimming trees and picking apples at the orchard. He volunteered at the 4-H fair serving as a steward in the industrial arts department encouraging youth to keep working with wood and electricity. Charles also volunteered at the 4-H camp in Marlborough where he did many projects to improve the camp and served as the treasurer for 25 years. He was also involved in the HELCO Men’s Club and ARENU (Association of Retired Employees of Northeast Utilities). Charles was a talented wood worker focusing on the details, for a perfect finish. He also truly enjoyed traveling with his wife and fellow retired friends.
Besides his wife Lorraine, his loving wife of 61 years, Charles is survived by his son Robert Ferguson and his wife Janet of Coventry, his daughter Sue Ferguson Belair and her husband Mike of Cromwell; four grandchildren Christopher Ferguson and his wife Rebecca of Ashford, Melissa Ferguson of Coventry, Adam Belair of Cromwell and Kevin Belair of Cromwell, who is serving in the U.S Army stationed at Fort Hood TX and presently deployed overseas. He is also survived by his sister in law Margaret Kinney Sweet of Groton; one niece and two nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Dudley Ferguson and his wife Arleen, and brother in law Rick Sweet.
