Commander Raymond E. Sullivan, Jr., US Navy, Retired, 57, of Tallahassee, peacefully passed into God’s loving arms on Friday, July 13, 2018. A son of the late Raymond E. Sullivan, Sr. and Catherine Walsh Sullivan, he was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 7, 1960. He was selected for Officer Candidate School in the United States Navy in 1984 and honorably served until 2004, retiring as a Commander and earning numerous medals and citations. He received dual undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at St. Vincent University and Pennsylvania State University respectively. He later earned Master’s Degrees from both the Navy Post Graduate School at Monterey, CA and the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. He served with distinction on numerous ships with the latest as Executive Officer (XO) onboard the USS Cimarron. His final posting was as a professor at the Naval War College. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pennsylvania State Nittany Lions. No matter where he traveled and lived during his Navy career, he always considered Pittsburgh his home. In addition to his loving wife, Tracey Lyn Mitas, he is survived by his sons, Matthew Sullivan (Taylor), Gabriel Sullivan and Anthony Sullivan; grandson, Hunter Sullivan; siblings, Ronald Sullivan, Susan Mitas (Michael), Colleen Howard (William); brothers-in-law, Joshua Mitas (Anna) and Paul Mitas (Cyndi); as well as nieces and nephews, Chris Mitas (Polly), Ryan Mitas (Katie), Carson Mitas, Avery Mitas, Hannah Mitas and Emily Mitas. Also surviving are his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Mary Mitas.
