Caton N. Hill, Jr., 79, of Philippi passed away April 30, 2016 at Mon General Hospital, Morgantown, WV. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joan Copeman Hill; two daughters, Nancy Hill of Philippi and Julia Hill Stern of Bridgeport. Caton was born May 20, 1936 in Charleston, WV, the son of the late Caton N. Hill and Ruth Hines Hill.

Caton graduated from Charleston High School and earned a BA in history at Washington and Lee University; he attended West Virginia University’s College of Law and received his LLB in 1961. He practiced law in Philippi with Talbott, Luff and Hill until 1977 thereafter, he established his private practice. He was prosecuting attorney of Barbour County for almost 19 years. He also served as a city attorney representing Philippi, Belington and for the town of Junior. He represented Farm Credit. BC Bank, Freedom Bank, and Premier Bank real estate transactions. He was the original attorney for the Barbour County Bank and served until his retirement in 2011. Professional memberships include the West Virginia State Bar Association, president of the 19th Judicial Circuit Bar Association, member of the board of directors of the WV Bar Foundation, past master of Bigelow Lodge #52, AF & AM, member of Knights Templar, Scottish Rite, Osiris Temple Shrine, the Red Fez Patrol, and Philippi Chapter #41, Order of the Eastern Star. Hill was a charter member and past president of the 19th Judicial Circuit Bar Association and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church and was elected mayor of Philippi for eight years. He was a charter member of the Barbour Chamber and was selected Man of the Year in 1995. Caton enjoyed golf, bridge, hunting and fishing. He was also an avid Mountaineer football fan.
