Cathleen Ann Smith, age 65, of Madison, CT passed away January 2, 2022 at her residence following a long illness. After graduating Trumbull High School, Cathie pursued her passion for early childhood education and development studying at community colleges in Connecticut and New Jersey and working with preschoolers and children with muscular dystrophy.
Cathie was always a sports enthusiast and went regularly to New York baseball and football games with her father and brother. After a short stint as a Met fan from 1969 to 1973, Cathie became a life-long Yankee fan. Among her fondest memories were a trip to Yankee Spring Training where she could see, up close, her favorite player, Ron Guidry.
Cathie enjoyed the pageantry and excitement of the pre-bowl game parades, as well as her favorite, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. She carried this interest into becoming a member of the Troubadors color guard.
Of great devotion, too, was her tradition of watching the yearly Jerry Lewis Telethons for the aid of Muscular Dystrophy research. While not suffering from the disease herself, Cathie had a great empathy for those who suffered from physical and mental handicaps. She also shared her devoted love for her nieces, nephews and godchild, by encouraging them in their school careers and pursuing personal accomplishments and interests.
Cathie was predeceased by her father Donald Smith Sr. and her infant brother David. She is survived by her loving mother Diane (Beninco) Smith, her devoted brothers and sister Donald Smith Jr. and his wife Anna (Kimball), Julie DeMaio and Douglas Smith; two nieces and three nephews; and a devoted Aunt, Uncles, and cousins.
