Catherine Loggie Holst, who lived in Flagstaff and Sun City West for many years, passed away on March 12 at the age of 89.

Born in Wilkinsburg, PA on January 24, 1920, she grew up in Pittsburgh where she graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology and worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II. With her late husband, Lt. Colonel (Ret.) William Walker Holst, she raised seven children while living in Germany, Japan, and five U.S. states.

Settling in Arizona in 1961, she taught at Flagstaff schools for many years, then moved to Sun City West. There she was active volunteering with the Pioneer Society and at Luke Air Force Base.

Eventually she found a second home at Freedom Inn where she was surrounded by friends and a supportive, loving staff. She also spent many days at Sun City West Women’s Club with card-playing friends and social activities. She brought happiness to all who knew her, and is survived by all her children, sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
