Catherine Jean Vroman was a caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She went home to Jesus while holding her sons’ hands in her home on December 6, 2021, at the age of 71. She spent her final months surrounded by family and the nurses from Friends and Family Home Care and Hospice who showed her so much love and gave her the absolute best care.
Cathy was born on April 12, 1950, in Fairbury, NE, to Gene and Shirley (Shellhase) Mees and was the oldest of 6 children. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1968 and then took classes at both DMACC and UNI. She worked in insurance, advertising, and for three different CPA firms. Her final career move was to be a homemaker where she raised three children and was a devoted and loving mother.
Cathy had a passion for her family. She took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with her kids and grandkids and loved making memories with them. Until recently she had a townhome in both Iowa and Florida so she could split her time where her children lived; she couldn’t pick just one place if she had kids in two places. She never stopped fighting for and advocating for her kids and grandkids. She loved doing any kind of craft activity and loved doing them with family. She will be remembered for her endless patience, her calm spirit, her grace in all circumstances, and most importantly, her love for Jesus.
She accepted her diagnosis of ALS with so much grace; her exact words were “I am at peace with my Lord.” She knew she wasn’t meant to live on this earth forever and she knew the Lord was preparing a perfect home and body for her in heaven. We rejoice that she is singing praises to the Lord and can run and dance in heaven.
Cathy is survived by her three children, James Thomas of West Des Moines, IA, Tari (Ben) Sharman of Oldsmar, Florida, Mark (Karen) Vroman of West Des Moines, IA, and her ten grandchildren: Shelby, Zoey, Engeland, Neves, Sydney, Jamen, Jadalyn, Preston, Melody, and Vivian. She is also survived by her siblings Steve (Janet) Mees, Bernadette (John) Rehbein, and Rick (Michelle) Mees; her sisters-in-law Kathy Mees and Kate Hymans-Smith. Additionally, she is survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews who had a special place in her heart. And finally, she is survived by her beloved cat, Aurora Vroman. She was preceded in death by her father, Gene Mees, her mother, Shirley Mees, her sister Connie (Doyle) Smith and her brother Bob (Kathy) Mees.
