Catherine G. “Katie” Martinez, 89, of Palatka, passed from this life on Thursday, May 13, 2021, at her home following an extended illness. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Katie graduated from Florida State University in 1952 with her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. A newlywed, Katie and her husband, Daniel A. Martinez then moved to Palatka where she accepted a job teaching at Campbell Elementary School (1952-1955). She then transitioned over to Moseley Elementary School where she taught for 2 years until the birth of their first child.
Katie’s role in the family then became the loving mother to their 3 children and supportive wife to her husband Dan who became an executive with Hudson Pulp & Paper / Georgia Pacific Corporation. She would also become involved in the Ladies Guild at St. Monica Catholic Church as well as the GFWC Woman’s Club of Palatka. In addition to loving and supporting her children’s various activities throughout the years, Katie enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family as well as playing Bridge. She also thoroughly enjoyed traveling and taking cruises with friends and family.
Katie is survived by her devoted husband of 68 years, Daniel A. “Danny” Martinez of Palatka, 2 sons, David Martinez (Kris) of St. Simons Island, GA, Bruce Martinez of Palm Beach Gardens, a daughter, Arlene Col (Doug) of Johns Creek, GA, a brother, Paul Gatta, Jr. of Plant City and 6 grandchildren, Kyle Martinez (Ellen), Caitlin Burge (Jason), Daniel Carter Martinez (Michaela), Jacob Martinez, Taylor Col, and Anna Col.
