Catharina (Kohut) Szestakow, 99, of New Britain, passed away on Monday, February 22, 2021. She was born in Holodowka, Lwow, Ukraine on January 15, 1922 to the late Wasyl and Rozalia (Pijak) Kohut. She met her true love, Wasyl Szestakow in Germany and married him in 1948. Together, they immigrated to the U.S. in 1950 through Ellis Island and lived in New York City. In 1953, they settled in New Britain and started their family. Catharina attended night school to learn English and soon became a proud U.S. citizen. She was a machinist at Atlantic Machine Tool as well as Stanley Works for many years. Catharina was a member of the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Sisterhood and enjoyed spending social time at the New Britain Senior Center. An excellent cook and baker, she was known as the Pierogi Lady serving many families during the holidays.
