Catarino Allala Rede, a New Mexico native and longtime Silver City resident, passed away on March 28, 2017. He was 91. Known to friends as Cat, he was born on March 22, 1926, in Artesia, N.M., to parents Luciano and Justa Rede. Raised in a family of migrant farm workers, he set out on his own at an early age and worked at a number of jobs, including as a millwright at a pipe foundry and as a stationary engineer in a California hospital, where he met his wife, Oralia Caballero, a registered nurse.
The couple moved to Silver City in December 1988, following Cat’s retirement. A World War II Navy veteran, he became deeply involved in the community as a life member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Good Sam Club, and a member of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). A lifelong Catholic, he was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Francis Newman Center Parish. He also served as an elected leader of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Cat enjoyed travel, baseball (he was a San Francisco Giants fan), and quiet evenings with his wife. The couple had been married for 46 years. Above all, Cat loved his extended family spanning four generations.
He is survived by his wife Ora, of Silver City; daughters, Rosemary Hermocillo (Robert) of Oceanside, California, and Catherine Flavin of Dillingham, Alaska; son, George Rede (Lori) of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren, Bernadette Hermocillo Rackley (Terrell) of Oceanside, Austin Flavin (Starr) of Palmer, Alaska, Nathan Rede and Simone Rede (Kyndall), both of Portland, and Jordan Rede (Jamie) of Spanaway, Washington; and four great-grandchildren, Justice, Jada and Ashton Flavin, all of Palmer, and Emalyn Rede, of Spanaway. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Valentina Hernandez and Mary Rodriguez; and brothers Paul, Ray, Joe, Albert, Luciano Jr. and Manuel Rede; infant son, Robert Joseph; and infant daughters, Beverly Jean and Barbara Ann.
