Carrie Estelle Garland was born April 12, 1928 to the late Robert Gilliard and Irene Chavis in Charleston, South Carolina. She received her early academic education in Charleston, as well as Irmo South Carolina. After completing school in South Carolina, she relocated to New York in 1946 and furthered her education by attending Drake Business School.
She met and married the love of her life Johnny Henry Garland on June 12, 1948. The union was blessed with one daughter, Thelma. They became members at Trinity United Methodist Church in 1958, under the pastorate of Rev. Isaac H. Bivens.
Through the years she was very active with various committees and organizations. Her involvements included: membership on the Health & Welfare committee, Evangelism, Communion Steward, and Treasure of the United Methodist Women. In addition, she sung on the Gospel Choir until a vocal problem led her to take a leave of absence. We know that she is now “singing and rejoicing in heaven.”

Having made spiritual preparation, she readily answered the Master’s Call on March 9, 2010. Two of Carries favorite bible scriptures were: “Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation: Whom shall I fear?” “Psalm 91:1-2 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust”
Carrie Leaves behind to celebrate her life: her wonderful daughter and son-in-law James and Thelma Whitehead, her two loving granddaughters Cryshel E. Whitehead and Crystal E. Fisher, two loving great-grandsons James C. Whitehead and Christopher R. Fisher, two sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and very special friends.
One of her sayings was: You know where you’ve been You don’t know where youre going Or who you are going to need before you leave here
Carrie loved very much her daughter, son in-law, grand and great- grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
