She received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Elementary Education from Tuskegee Institute (now known as Tuskegee University) and went on to pursue her doctoral studies at the University of Ohio.
She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters- Gwendolyn Todd Dean, MD, FAAP (father Sherman Todd) and Vivian Felicia Ferguson Sanders; six grandchildren: Michelle Denise Greer (father Wilson Greer, MD), Alicia Marie Dean and Adolph Doc Dean, III (father Adolph Joseph Dean, Jr. Esq.), Vivian Nicole Sanders, Dominique Ferguson, Joe Dean Meadows a sister- Dr. Everlena M.
Like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Carrie Ethel would like for us to remember her for her desire to love and serve humanity:
“I, too, tried to love somebody; I tried to love children and teaching profession; I tried to serve the many communities in which I resided; the many schools in which I taught; I tried to remember the less fortunate at all times; I, too, was a drum major for impartial treatment of others; for truth and fairness in all dealings; I, too, was a drum major for righteousness and honesty. Four references kept me struggling in my earthly life:
‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’
‘Press toward the Mark of the prize of the High Call in Christ Jesus.’
‘Nothing beats a try but a failure.’
‘Three strikes and you’re out.’
My family and friends might remember me in their unselfish concern for the welfare of the poor and the less fortunate around them. ”
Carrie Ethel was called from labor to rest in Ochsner Hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana on June 26, 2015. She was a resident at Chateau de Notre Dame Skilled Nursing facility since August 2010. Her daughter Gwendolyn, granddaughters, Michelle and Alicia were at her bedside during her transition. The passing of Carrie Ethel Lee McDonald Todd Ferguson Shedd will be felt by all who knew and loved her.
