Carrie Anderson Butler, of Boulder CO, formerly of Ridgewood, died peacefully on December 10, 2017. A thirty-four year resident of Ridgewood, she served as Deputy Mayor and Council member of the Village of Ridgewood from 1982 to 1986. The second elected woman to the Council, she initiated the Project Pride program – a beautification effort throughout the Village that still continues – as well as the first Village newsletter, and monthly “Coffees with the Council.” The Project Pride Program was recognized by the Bergen County Freeholders, and Mrs. Butler was appointed chairwoman to organize the first Bergen Project Pride Committee. Born in La Junta, Colorado on March 19, 1928, she was raised in the West. She graduated with honors from the University of Colorado, majoring in journalism for her BA degree. After college she pursued a career in New York City in public relations, working for Carl Byoir Associates and as assistant public relations director for Raymond Loewy, the industrial designer. She married John R. Butler, II in July, 1953, and later they settled in Ridgewood to raise their family of three children. An active volunteer, Carrie Butler organized and served as the first chairwoman of Friends of Music and Friends of the Band. Additionally, she held offices in the Willard and George Washington Home and School Associations. She was active in the Ridgewood YMCA, College Club, American Association of Women, TIC TOC, Fourth of July Committee and other Village efforts. She served as chairwoman of the Kasschau Memorial Shell Committee for five years, extending the summer programs to 20 events and implementing sound and stage improvements. In 1979 she was awarded the Mayor’s Award of Excellence for her many volunteer contributions. An active Republican, she served as County Committee woman for many years and was a member of the Ridgewood Republican Club and the Ridgewood Unit of Republican Women, as well as the Women’s Republican Club of New York City. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a member of the Ridgewood Country Club and the New York Athletic Club. She was predeceased by her husband, John R. Butler II, in 2004 and is survived by her three children Mary Helen Butler Carroll and spouse Tom of Broomfield, CO., John R. Butler, Ill and spouse Kim of Glen Rock, NJ and Patrick B. Butler and spouse Sarah of New York, NY. In addition, Mrs. Butler is survived by seven grandchildren: Mary Carroll, Catherine Butler, John R. Butler, IV, and spouse Ashley (with great-granddaughter Evangeline), Sara Butler, Ann Butler, Natalie Butler and Lucy Butler.
