Carolyn Elizabeth Shippee, 88, of Lafayette, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at Creasy Springs Health Campus.

She was born September 19, 1933, in East Orange, NJ, to the late James and Elizabeth (Balfe) Erichsen.

Carolyn attended Saint Mary’s Grade School. She graduated from West Lafayette High School and received her bachelor’s degree from Purdue University.

On September 7, 1955, she married Ensign John H. Shippee in Lafayette and he survives.

Carolyn was a Jeweler and owned Rings and Things in Lafayette.

Carolyn was first and foremost a mother. She loved spending time with her children and their families. Golf was her favorite sport and she hit 2 hole-in-one’s during her lifetime. She was an avid kayaker. She traveled the world far and wide with her beloved husband John.  Carolyn sang in the St. Mary’s Choir. She was a strong supporter of Purdue Women’s Basketball and was a nanny for many years to the coach’s children.  An extremely skilled knitter, she professionally hand knitted dresses and sweaters. In the last several years, she knitted over 350 afghan blankets for the YWCA Women’s Shelter.  She had a keen mind and a hilarious sense of humor.  She was a walking encyclopedia of Lafayette history. Her presence was larger than life and she will be dearly missed by all her friends and especially by her family.

Surviving with her husband John are children, Lisa (Luke) Hosinski of San Juan Capistrano, CA, James (Renato) Shippee of Los Angeles, CA, Mike (Patty) Shippee of King George, VA, and David (Melanie) Shippee of Statesville, NC. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Conor, Stuart, Clare, Lucy, Nicholas, Annie, Claire and Grant.
