Carolyn Hart Crawford, 97 years, of Jacksonville, IL died Monday morning, August 7, 2006 at the Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville.

She was born December 11, 1908 in Wuhu, Anhwei Province, China; the daughter of Dr. Edgerton Haskell and Caroline Maddock Hart. She married Lawrence Crawford Sr. on October 18, 1930 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded in death on May 1, 1977.

She is survived by a son, Lawrence “Bud” Crawford Jr. of Fraser, CO; two daughters, Carol Eikelmann (husband, Kenneth) of Sacramento, CA and Cathleen “Cathy” Green (husband, Dr. James) of Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, Steven A. Crawford (wife, Terri) of Ridgecrest, CA, Stuart B. Crawford (wife, Patricia) of Lakewood, CO, Stanley C. Crawford of Jiujiang, China, Susan C. Jones (husband, Dan) of Niwot, CO, Valerie Clark (husband, Matt) of Pleasanton, CA, Leslie Sandoval (husband, Randy) of Citrus Heights, CA, Julie Bachler (husband, Jeffrey) of Frankfort, Susan E. Callaghan (husband, Barrett) of Orland Park, and Christine Knox (husband, Robert) of Castle Rock, CO; 20 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Gertraud R. Crawford; three sisters, Rose Hart Potts, Dorothea M. Hart, and Helen Hart Reynolds; and four brothers, Herbert G. Hart, Edgerton H. Hart Jr., Wellington J. Hart, and Virgil C. Hart II.

Mrs. Crawford moved from China to Chicago in 1913 following the death of her father. She graduated from Illinois Womenâ??s College in 1930, the last class prior to the institution being named MacMurray College. She taught school in Murrayville until her marriage.

A devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville, she served the church as an elder, deacon, trustee, and former moderator of Presbyterian Women. She was a member of the pastoral search committee which brought the Rev. Dale Robb to Jacksonville and served as commissioner to the National General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1965. She was also a member of the church’s Evening Circle.

She enjoyed membership in the Ladies Education Society, AAUW, The Wednesday Class, West Central Illinois Council On World Affairs, Jacksonville Symphony Society, Passavant Hospital Auxiliary, and the Art Association of Jacksonville. An avid and extensive world traveler, she maintained an active interest in China. She devoted countless hours to her volunteer work at Passavant Area Hospital over 30 years. She formerly served on the board of directors for the Sherwood Eddy Memorial YMCA in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Crawford maintained a lifetime interest in the advancement of medical science and provided volunteer service to assist with Alzheimer’s Disease and Tremor research conducted by the SIU School of Medicine.
