HESS

Carolyn Ann Drumm Hess (Mawzie), a homemaker, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William Jacob Hess, Jr. and her parents Irad C. Drumm and Lucille Johnson Drumm.  She is survived by her six children, Mary Elizabeth Hess, Lucille Mercedes Hess, William Jacob Hess III (Penelope Zesch), John Carlyle Hess (Theresa Gibson), Claire Louise Hess (Julia Ann Webb), James Wallace Hess , six grandchildren:  William Jacob Hess IV, Sarah Ann Hess, Andrew Franklin Hess, Abbey Elizabeth Hess, Olivia Grace Hess and Patrick Aubrey Hess, her sister Marianne Drumm Boyer (Karl) and her brother-in-law Edward W. Hess (Bette) as well as nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and a host of dear friends of all ages.

A graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican High School (’52) and College (’56), Carolyn served as president of the Dominican College Alumnae Association.  She was instrumental in placing Greenville Hall on the National Registry of Historic Places and was honored with the Dominican Alumnae Torchbearer’s Award.  A founding member of St. Angela Merici Parish she held numerous offices on the St. Angela Ladies Auxiliary (SALA), The Parish Council and the School Board.  She chaired the Parish’s Catholic Life 2000 Committee and in 1978 was recognized by the Archdiocese of New Orleans with the Order of St. Louis.  A devoted wife and mother, Carolyn served on the Archdiocese of New Orleans School Board, the Jesuit High School Parents Club Board, the New Orleans Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Auxiliary and the Wheel N Deal Square Dance Club.  In later life, she rediscovered her love of bridge and spent many happy hours with her two bridge clubs.

Carolyn loved her family, her friends and her community.  Throughout her life, she actively valued and supported education through lifelong learning.  She will be missed.
