Our mother, Carolbeth (Ulm) Snyder, passed to the Lord’s reward early Friday morning, December 23, after a battle with cancer. She was 88 years old. She has finally rejoined her husband, Dr. Harvey J “Bud” Snyder Jr, who preceded her in death in 1993.
Carolbeth was born in Saint Joe, Indiana, in September 1934, to Robert Buren Ulm and Alyce Nadine Ullett, and grew up with her maternal grandparents Lavender and Mildred Ullett, all of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from East Sparta High School in 1952 and was accepted into the nursing program at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio, where she met her husband, Harvey, during his residency and they were married in 1955. She later completed her degree at Akron General Hospital’s School of Nursing, graduating in 1963, and taught Oncology and Death-and-Dying at the school until it closed in 1984.
At home, she managed, organized, fed, and raised her eight children, their classmates and teammates, many foster children, neighborhood kids, and generally anyone who came through the door. She was an avid supporter of her children’s sports and activities, never missing an event. She sewed team uniforms and banners, catered meals to the traveling teams, and was always vocal in her support. Her signature yodel rang out across gyms, auditoriums, and natatoriums all around northeast Ohio. You always knew when Mrs. Snyder was in the house.
She traveled, family in tow, to Alaska and Mexico in support of her husband’s medical and missionary trips. She was also a fan of North Carolina’s sandy beaches and spearheaded family summer vacations at Emerald Isle, where she treasured time with a good book under a sun umbrella.
Carolbeth spent her final years in Charlotte, North Carolina, and lastly in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
Carolbeth is survived by her eight children: Harvey J “Jeff” Snyder, Robert Buren Snyder, Bethany Carol Snyder, Deborah Alyce Shanor, James Daniel Snyder, David Mark Snyder, John Paul Snyder, and Melissa Lynn Kraeger, their spouses, eighteen grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
