Carol Lenore (Pomilia) (Whitaker) Hood, age 91, of Bagley, AL, left this life and joyously entered the gates of heaven on January 1, 2022. Born on April 27, 1930, to Paul Joseph Pomilia and Doris Evelyn Walmsley, in the city of Chicago, Illinois, her upbringing made her “street-wise” and fiercely protective of her younger brother Robert “Bobby” Pomilia. Carol faced many obstacles throughout her life, and is a true example of an overcomer.
At the age of 18 she married a tender-hearted man named Loyd Eugene Whitaker who brought her to meet his family in Alabama. She fell in love with Alabama, begged to move permanently, and shortly thereafter gave birth to their two children, Sandra Lee (Whitaker) Leslie and Norman J. “Butch” Whitaker.
After 25 years of marriage, Carol’s first husband, Loyd, passed away. Later in life, she would remarry a man named Jack Hood. Jack proved to be a loving grandfather to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren they shared together. After 25 years of marriage, Jack also preceded her in death.
Though her trials and tribulations gave her a hard exterior, Carol remained soft and tender underneath.
Carol went by many names in this life — Sister Carol, Momma, Grandma, and GG, to name a few. Though she will be sorely missed by her family and friends, they take comfort in knowing she passed with the assurance of being welcomed home by her Heavenly Father.
Carol is also preceded in death by her great granddaughter, Christy Giles, and great-great grandson, Dalton Spain. She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Sandy & Howard Leslie, and Butch & Alice Whitaker; five grandchildren and their spouses (Lee, Mark, Dusty, Lora, and Brandon); ten great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
