Carol J. Brown age 74, of DeMotte, IN passed away on Friday October 23, 2009 at Broadway Methodist Hospital, Merrillville, IN. She was born in DeCorah, IA on November 21, 1934 to Lorna (Dundee) and Richard Thornton, both deceased. Carol was dearly loved by her family and friends. She was a woman whose gentle kindness and acceptance of other brought out the best in everyone around her.
Carol was a 1952 graduate of DeMotte High School and achieved her teaching degree from Indiana University. Carol’s first teaching experience was at DeMotte United Methodist Church, teaching kindergarden. After she got her teaching degree she went on to teach 4th grade Math at DeMotte Elementary and then 6th grade Math at KV Middle School where she retired. After retirement Carol kept active with school being a substitute teacher.
On February 4, 1976 she married Robert Brown, who survives. She was a member of DeMotte United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday School and actively supported the womens auxiliary.
Carol is survived by her loving husband, Robert Brown, DeMotte, IN. Children; Lance (Sherri) Cheever, Jeffersonville, IN; Laine (Maureen) Cheever, Evanston, IL; and Lyle (Colleen) Cheever, Arlington Heights, IL. Step-children; Terri (James) Richardson, W. Terre Haute, IN; Jerri (Mick) Fuson, Farmersburg,IN and Ward (Monishae) Brown, W. Los Angeles, CA. 7 grandchildren 6 step-grandchildren 6 step-great grandchildren. Brothers, Bill (Marge) Thornton, Tempe, AZ and Richard (Debra) Thornton, DeMotte, IN. Sister , Doreen Muraida, AZ. Sister-in-law, Fern Thorton, Sun City, FLA.
Preceded in death by her parents and brother, Lester Thornton.
