Carol Ann Berry Waid (1944-2019)
Carol Ann Berry Waid passed away peacefully at Charlton Methodist Hospital in Dallas Texas on May 29, 2019, of cardiomyopathy.
She was born on June 15, 1944, in the city of Weston, Lewis County, in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia. The daughter of David A Berry and Magdalene Ecker, she was the middle child, with older brothers Dave and Frank and younger siblings Janice and Ken. After her father died when she was five years old she learned from and worked alongside her devoted mother, developing a strong work ethic and love of family. She learned to cook, sew and dance, and found joy sitting on the porch with family and friends. She was trusted by many Weston families and babysat countless children to help support her mother and siblings.
Carol Ann was a proud student for 12 years at Saint Patrick Catholic School in Weston, where she was an active member of Sodality, Glee Club and Choir. Her high school prom dress was proudly hung in her closet all her life. She and her friends danced the nights away at the Weston Youth Center. Her love of dancing never ended.
After high school in 1962, she attended and graduated from the Morgantown School of Cosmetology where she developed exceptional talent in hair cutting and styling. During this time she became the sweetheart of Tim (Tom) Waid of Hinton, West Virginia, a student at the University of West Virginia in Morgantown. After he graduated with a degree in Business Administration, they eloped and were married on October 3, 1964, at Pearisburg Baptist Church in Pearisburg, Virginia. During their two year courtship and early marriage whenever they were separated, she wrote prolific love letter always with the same ending “Love Always”
Her first home was in St. Charles, Missouri, just west of St. Louis, where she worked as a beautician while her husband sold insurance for Metropolitan Life. She became a lifelong Cardinal baseball fan, attending games while pregnant with Tim, born in 1965 and Fred, born in 1968.
She loved being a Little League and soccer team Mom and became a loyal fan of the New Orleans Saints. After living in Texas for 35 years, she remained faithful to her Saints, even when they played the Cowboys and proudly wore her Saints gear in Cowboy Stadium at games.
From her childhood, Carol Ann was a woman of faith and tried to be Christ-like throughout her life. She loved all people of all races, beliefs and backgrounds. She served in many church assignments throughout her life including Young Women Presidencies, Relief Society, Children’s Primary and as foster mother in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In 1976 she was sealed in eternal marriage to her husband and their three children were sealed to them as an eternal family in the Washington DC Temple in Kensington, Maryland.
After moving to Dallas in 1983, she served for 11 years as an Educational Aid in the Duncanville ISD, working with students at Duncanville High School, Byrd Middle School and Brandenberg Intermediate. Her greatest joy was helping children with disabilities learn and lifting the spirits of children from troubled homes. Her love knew no bounds.
Carol Ann devoted her life to the nurture and care of her three children, ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She loved attending the Berry Family Reunions and weddings, and cherished her relationships with her father and mother -in-law, brothers, sister, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, friends and strangers. She loved to make and share homemade bread, chocolate covered peanut butter cups and her mother’s butterhorn pastries. He favorite vacation destination was the beautiful white beaches with spectacular sunsets in Naples Florida, the home of her Father and Mother -in-law.
Carol Ann is preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother Ken Berry, and will be buried next to her parents in West Virginia. In her final days, she reminded everyone she wanted to go home to her beloved Weston.
She is survived in death by her husband of 55 years Tom Waid of Duncanville, Texas and three sons: Tim Waid (Malou) of Allen, Texas, Fred Waid (Dawn) of Las Vegas, Nevada and Chance Waid of Austin, Texas.
She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Michelle, Frank, Alexa (Brandon), Madison (Dallin), Davis, Chance, Pearce, Grant, Ben and Emmy; along with 4 great-grandchildren: David, Jackie, Georgie and Jane. In addition, she is survived by her brothers Dave Berry (Pat) and Frank Berry (Diana), sister Janice Orr (Dick) and sister in law, Fran Berry.
