MARIA CARMEN RAMIREZ

Seven generations ago, a newlywed couple walked up a coastal trail to found a little dusty farming and trading pueblo known now simply as Los Angeles. Over the generations, many people walked that trail, and improved it and the lives of those using it. Carmen, as a descendant of that couple, blazed her own trail of justice that helped innumerable people. In a single generation, she achieved milestone after milestone of progress in areas such as social, civil, and environmental justice. She continued on that path until her last step.
But, Dear Friends, know that the path that led her to become a beloved public servant was not always an easy one. Growing up in what was known as Pico Viejo and is now the City of Pico Rivera, she lived as a member of one of the under served communities she came to champion. Her gifted intelligence, her luck to be an English speaker, and her ability to focus brought her professional and academic success, despite the large-family chaos of living-in-a-too-small-space and the material scarcity that comes with the discrimination of a minority-workers economy.
It is impossible to catalog or even summarize Carmen’s achievements in this small space. But people should know that her home is filled with uncountable awards, certificates of appreciation, and artistically designed trophies. Going through her effects, whenever we found a new commendation or certificate announcing her outstanding accomplishments we learned of another under-served community she helped.
As members of her family, we are incredibly proud of extraordinary life. Now we are experiencing a profound loss, but with the love and support of her community far and wide, we will celebrate her life and work to preserve her legacy.
Carmen is survived by her husband Roy Prince, her siblings Renaldo Joseph Ramirez, John Ramirez Jr., María Elena Ramirez, Rose Maria Ramirez and her husband Joe Moreno, Elisa Maria McClelland and her husband Robert McClelland; Her many nieces and nephews: Elisa Greenburg, Rogelio Herrera, Rick Ramirez, Jr., Francisco Ramirez, James McClelland, Paul Herrera, Daniel Ramirez, Gus Yeakey, Erica Marie Ramirez, John E Ramirez, Erin Eleanor McClelland; her great nieces and nephews. Additionally, she is survived by her adopted sons Gabriel and Robert Prince and Roy’s daughters-in-law and his was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor, her father John and her beloved youngest brother, Rick Ramirez, Sr.
