To Everything There is . . . A Time
To Be Born. Carmelita Morris was born on May 7, 1937, in Maroon Town, St. James, on the beautiful island of Jamaica West Indies to Stanton and Hilda Clarke Morris. She was the 4th born and was later joined by 4 others making a total of eight siblings: Phyllis, Daisy, Daphne, Merlene, Russell, Barry, and Patsy. Russell and Barry must have had a rough time being outnumbered by 6 sisters. She and her siblings enjoyed life in Maroon Town and flourished.
To Learn and Leave. Mother Hilda taught her children to take advantage of learning all you can and she strongly encouraged the girls to be independent. So even with Maroon Town’s rich history, beautiful beaches and mountains, sugar cane and banana crop industries, mangoes, apple trees, soursop, sweetsop, jack fruit, and other delicacies, family and many friends, it was just not enough to hold the fourth born child of Stanton and Hilda Morris. Not long after attending Maroon Town All Age School, Miss Independent Carmelita, with the excellent domestic skills, including cooking, that she had learned from her mother, left Maroon Town in 1956 for a better life in Kingston.
To Love. In Kingston, Carmelita met and married Percival Francis and they established a home. To this union two children were born: Kenneth and Sharon.
To Build. In addition to married life and two children, the lass who had learned independence from her mother Hilda, launched a business enterprise. She was the sole owner of a craft market in Kingston. She was dedicated and hardworking. Her craft items appealed to the tourist market and her business endeavor was very successful. After eleven years, Carmelita set her sights on a different horizon.
To Follow Her Dream. In 1967 Ms. Carmelita migrated to the United States, Utica, New York. She was remarried in 1977 to Clifton Myrie. She furthered her education in the nursing field, became a Licensed Practical Nurse, and worked for 34 years at Eden Park Nursing Home until her retirement in May, 2003. In the U.S., she continued to employ her entrepreneurial skills very successfully in the area of real estate investment. She actually made one of her properties available to her daughter Sharon, Neville, and their family for a few years, setting a perfect example of independence for them as Mother Hilda had taught her.
To find. Carmelita found and confessed Christ and was baptized at St.
To Reunite, Rediscover, and Recommit. After retirement, the plan for her to reunite with Sharon, Neville, and family in Orlando was executed in May 2004. Nevertheless, after one year, 2005, Mother Carmelita changed the plan. She said, “I need my own space, my independence.” So, she tapped again into the world of real estate and got her own place that she thoroughly enjoyed.
She volunteered at John Bridges Community Center and was always supporting community fairs, cooking, answering phones, doing anything she could to help others.
It was in Orlando where her daughter helped her to rediscover Jesus in a way that she had never known. She made a recommitment to Christ and joined the Mt.
To Bid Farewell. Sister Carmelita Myrie was predeceased by her Mom and Dad, Hilda and Stanton; 5 siblings: Phyllis, Daisy, Daphne, Merlene, and Russell; Husbands: Percival and Clifton; and her darling son, Kenneth.
To Be Remembered. She leaves to cherish her memory here and to meet her again in heaven, her devoted and loving daughter Sharon (Neville) Bennett; three grandsons, Mark (Makom) Powell, Orlando (Yuliya) Bennett, and Jermaine (Ramona) Bennett; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Barry Grizzle, Kingston, Jamaica; one sister, Patsy Grizzle, Montego Bay; niece, Lorna Reid & Grand-Nephew, Anthony (Creola) Clarke, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl; other nieces and nephews; cousins; friends.
