Friends of Carlos Mendez may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., as well as 30 minutes prior to the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 1108 S. Main St. The Rev. Phil DeVolder will officiate, and military honors by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19 and the U.S. Air Force Burial Honors Unit will follow in the church parking lot.
Mr. Mendez, 69, of East Jackson Boulevard, died at 6:03 a.m. Wednesday (July 26, 2006) at Elkhart General Hospital, after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 24, 1937, in Langeloth, Pa., to Jose and Juana (Garcia) Mendez. He married Mary Lynn “Jonie” Paulus on Sept. 21, 1968, in Elkhart. She died March 4, 2001.
He is survived by one son, Joseph F. (Sonya K.) Mendez of Mishawaka; one daughter, Carla M. Mendez (Jon Eberly) of San Antonio; three grandchildren; three brothers, Santos Mendez and Fernandos Mendez, both of Langeloth, Pa., and Robert (Mary) Mendez of Elkhart; two sisters, Juanita Mrowskowski and Lucy St. Clair, both of Burgettstown, Pa.; and a companion, Sue Ann Sturm-Geerts of Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Joseph and Thomas Mendez; and two sisters, Christine Chappell and Mary Bee Petrus.
Mr. Mendez formerly worked for 25 years at Riblet Products in Elkhart and for 10 years at Venture Welding. He was a longtime member of St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, where he worked as the custodian for 10 years.
He also was a member and past Grand Knight of Elkhart Knights of Columbus Council 1043 and was a former member of Elkhart Optimist Club. He graduated from Union High School in Burgettstown, in 1956 and was an Air Force veteran who enjoyed gardening, yardwork, movies and jazz, blues and country music.
